Des Moines Open Door Arts is a makerspace, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and create arts and crafts. The program is designed for the adults with disabilities, but all are welcome.
We are located at the Des Moines United Methodist Church and have a drop in style workspace open Wednesdays from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Our environment is friendly, welcoming and nurturing.
We plan to provide tools for creative expression such as painting or drawing, but also organized or pre-prepared crafts for those that prefer something more structured. The activities will evolve as we learn more about the skills and interests of our participants. If a participant needs support or supervision, they will need to bring their own caregiver. We are also collaborating with WISe (Wraparound with Intensive Services – a program through WA state) for guidance in supporting participants with special needs.
We plan to take our creations to Farmer’s Markets and Art Shows, providing the participants another opportunity to interact with the community. Any money we made selling our art will go towards buying supplies and tools.
